“Studying for the CYM MA has challenged me to move outside of my comfort zone and to consider perspectives I would not have otherwise encountered. This has impacted my practice as I have refined my understanding and in the process have become more self-aware.”

This flexible postgraduate studies pathway is ideal for those newly appointed into Chaplaincy roles, or those more established who are seeking to challenge and deepen their understanding and practice of these roles in ministry.

It enables students to gain an essential grounding in the theology of ministry and of contextual mission, and to combine these foundations with contemporary patterns and approaches in Chaplaincy.

Through the analysis of historical and contemporary literature from the field, it will enable students’ to unpack, explore and critique their own Chaplaincy ministry with young people or children both theologically and practically.

PG Cert Ministry, Mission and Professional Studies (Chaplaincy*)

Theology, Social Context and Mission

This module will enable students to identify and critically appreciate missional approaches, and their theological roots in Christian thought and practice.  It will introduce concepts and theories of culture, subcultures, diversity and society, and require students to engage both theological and sociological knowledge and understanding. Through assessment tasks, these debates and understandings will be brought to bear on ministry and mission in chaplaincy roles with children or young people.

Human Identity and Ministry

This module will provide an overview of perspectives on human identity and personhood found in development theories, theological anthropology and social and cultural studies. Particular emphasis will focus on an exploration of the concept of imago Dei and use this vantage point to develop an interdisciplinary dialogue on identity formation and social relationships. Through assessment tasks, these debates and understandings will be brought to bear on chaplaincy roles with children or young people.

Patterns and Approaches in Contemporary Ministry

Students will have the opportunity to explore and critique patterns, approaches and models in Chaplaincy work, and their theological and practical foundations. This will include stimulating an informed response to the principle texts in the field. Students will explore the distinctiveness of chaplaincy as a way of working with children and young people, contexts, models and approaches, values and theologies.  This will include understandings of chaplaincy from a multifaith context, differences between religious, spiritual and pastoral care, and engaging with critical incidents in the institution
