Overview

The BA (Hons) Contextual Ministry and Practical Theology provides a flexible qualification for those wishing to train in mission and ministry in a range of contexts. Combining interactive and creative teaching days with challenge and inspiring practical work in a ministry context, the course is designed to support your growth and development in all areas of your life and ministry.

The programme is highly responsive to emerging mission and ministry contexts involving work with adults, children and families, young people, chaplaincy, pioneer ministry or within formal education. Teaching days are facilitated by tutors with both academic expertise and significant mission and ministry experience, who support you in gaining a strong theological grounding as well as the development of your understanding and skills in practice.

Studying on this course will enable you to gain:

  • An in-depth understanding of contextual and practical theology; approaches and key disciplines.
  • The ability to relate key aspects of Christian theology to ministry and mission with young people, children and/or adults in a range of contexts.
  • A grounding in relevant social sciences such as psychology, sociology and cultural studies and the ability to relate these to ministry and mission with young people, children and/or adults.
  • An understanding and practice of contemporary mission and ministry with both within and beyond the church
  • A range of transferrable skills including independent and creative thinking, self-organisation, team-working, communication, project management, which are of interest to employers.

Learning in, and from, practice

For the duration of the course, you will be placed in a church or other appropriate setting where your formation in ministry and mission will be rooted in ongoing practice.

As well as interactive lectures and seminars you will be part of a specialist small group and receive one-to-one mentoring from an experienced practitioner in your field.

You will receive support from a dedicated line manager and other colleagues within these contexts, as well as a dedicated team within CYM who oversee all aspects of your studies.

Academic and Pastoral Support

High quality academic support is provided through experienced CYM tutors used to working with a range of particular learning needs and requirements.

Pastoral care and support is provided both in the college setting and in the placement, through appropriate experienced and skilled people.
