The CYM BA Honours degree in Practical Theology allows you to develop your ministry and work with children, young people, families, and their communities in context. On our programmes you learn by doing, not just by sitting in a classroom.

You will grow in your faith through theological study, and by being part of a worshipping community, and living out your relationship with God in practice.

Your practical ministry skills will develop as you apply your knowledge of working with people and the communities in which they live. As you reflect on your work, your understanding and vision for ministry will expand, and you'll gain greater clarity of the areas to which you feel called.

The first year of the BA course is designed to help you test and develop your calling; then, in years two and three, you will focus on one of our Specialist Pathways for the remainder of your course.

Study through a blended learning approach

All undergraduate teaching uses a blended learning approach. In-person teaching takes place two days per month in our campus at Grace Church in Nottingham.

Other online learning consists of a mix of scheduled group sessions and other individual work which you can schedule in your own time. This includes zoom lectures, seminars and group work activities, as well as pre-recorded teaching and other flexible activities to complete before attending your next group session.

The rest of your growth and learning comes through real-world experience in practice to gain the specialist pathway award*. This is typically 10-12 hours per week on average in a local church or community project in your area, giving you the flexibility to work round existing commitments and grow your skills in the community you currently serve, or discuss options for a new opportunity in a new area.

* The Community Youth Work pathway (JNC) is only available for students in UK or Ireland to enable us to fulfil the requirements set out by the National Youth Agency.
